About ClimatePlan

ClimatePlan is a powerful coalition leading policy efforts in California to shift transportation infrastructure funding away from expanding highways and toward sustainable and equitable modes of travel. ClimatePlan was formed in 2007 by 11 nonprofit organizations to implement California’s landmark Sustainable Communities law, SB 375 and the coalition has grown to include more than 50 partners who represent a broad range of interests, from urban planning and public health, to social equity, to natural and working land conservation. ClimatePlan’s mission is to advance policies and programs to address the relationship between land use policy and climate change, and leverage the resources and partnerships necessary to realize more sustainable and equitable development throughout California.

In summer 2024 ClimatePlan will launch campaign planning for an exciting new project to anchor California’s leadership in a national network aimed at investing in transit, biking, walking, and vehicle electrification that leads to carbon reduction, driving racial equity, cooling the planet, and strengthening the economy. 

About the Position

The ClimatePlan Executive Director leads a high-impact network, bringing together more than fifty non-profit organizations to achieve significant policy victories at the state and regional levels.  The ED facilitates convenings, engages directly with organizations and helps set policy direction for the network.  We are looking for excellent communicators who foster collaboration, attract new partners, and represent ClimatePlan to policy leaders, foundations and others.  Finally, the ED leads on operations, developing and maintaining the budget, hiring and training staff, etc.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and support ClimatePlan.  

  • Provide coaching, mentorship and accountability to staff, consultants and sub-grantees.  
  • Facilitate annual work plan development and monitor progress. 
  • Work with network members and staff to set annual priorities as well as lead and support implementation of regional and state policy direction. Develop systems to assess progress and ensure accountability.  
  • Provide thought leadership and facilitation to identify key policy opportunities at the state and regional levels, and craft strategies for engaging ClimatePlan partners. 
  • Facilitate ClimatePlan’s Steering Committee. Composed of partner organizations, this body provides governance and leadership to ClimatePlan.  Organize conference calls and in-person meetings. Lead recruitment efforts for Steering Committee members. 

Lead fundraising efforts. 

  • Identify, cultivate, and nurture strong working relationships with program officers at key foundations to sustain and grow the annual budget.
  • Develop and submit grant applications and other grant funding communications/materials

Foster ongoing collaboration.  

  • Design agendas for ClimatePlan events and strategy meetings, seed meaningful discussions, and facilitate conversations that lead to resolution and action.
  • Build relationships with funders, statewide and regional partners, and policymakers who are involved in efforts to tackle climate change, promote public health and equity, protect natural and working lands, and invest in sustainable transportation. 
  • Represent ClimatePlan to new audiences. 

Oversee organizational operations

  • Serve as Project Leader and main liaison between ClimatePlan and fiscal sponsor - ClimatePlan is a fiscally sponsored project, not its own 501(c)(3) non-profit
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise ClimatePlan staff.
  • Oversee the annual budgeting process and ensure strong systems are in place to track spending.
  • Develop and manage contracts for sub-grantees and/or consultants; track, review, and approve invoices. 

Expanding ClimatePlan’s reach:

  • Complete the strategic planning process and design ClimatePlan’s expansion into new issue areas, as determined by the network.
  • Build partnerships in new issue areas with funders, political and community leaders.
  • Be an external local and statewide presence that publishes and communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of the network and as a model for national replication.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Strong leadership and facilitation skills to convene, direct, and support a network of organizations.
  • Experience with running campaigns, movement building, and fundraising to support critical work.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of climate change, including the influence of land use and transportation policies and systems.
  • Experience, knowledge, and desire to learn about the injustices and inequities caused by housing, land use, and transportation decisions. 
  • Proven ability to build relationships with a diverse set of partners and decision-makers
  • Excellent communication skills, including research, writing, editing, and verbal communication.
  • Commitment to building an inclusive movement that welcomes a diversity of missions and political strategies. 
  • Positive attitude and sense of humor!

*COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This job is a full-time remote position. Salary range is $100,000- $120,000 a year. Benefits include medical and dental insurance, voluntary vision, life, and pet insurance, generous vacation time, cell phone and internet reimbursement, and a 403b retirement plan.
