Our Strategic Plan

ClimatePlan-Strategic-Plan-2018-cover-232x300.jpgClimatePlan’s 2018 Strategic Plan is the result of close collaboration with our coalition members across California. To all the partners who helped create this plan: Thank you, and we look forward to working with you to bring it to life!

ClimatePlan is at the forefront of the intersection of some of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, land use and transportation, and social equity. Better land use and transportation planning will help the climate -- and will also improve people's health, protect natural and working landscapes, and create access and opportunities for all.

Winning plans for more sustainable communities

ClimatePlan is proud to have helped position California as a leader in the fight against climate change by helping shape strong regional Sustainable Communities Strategies. These strategies aim to reduce driving (and so reduce greenhouse gases) by putting new homes close to jobs and public transit. They also encourage investment in public transit and safe streets for walking and biking.

Done right, these efforts can create walkable, affordable, family-friendly communities with cleaner air, while preserving the state’s iconic farmland and natural areas.

Only California has such comprehensive plans to fight climate change and improve communities. And only ClimatePlan is mobilizing the many advocates and community groups whose united voices can help these plans succeed.

Delivering on the promise

From 2015 to 2018, ClimatePlan is focusing on three goals:
1) Shaping strong regional plans;
2) Improving state policy and agency support around SB 375, the Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Act; and
3) Broadening ClimatePlan’s network to increase our impact.

Strong regional plans: Our new strategic plan is about turning from planning to implementation, from goals to achievements. We’re holding regional leaders accountable on their Sustainable Communities Strategies. We’re calling for the state to set stronger targets for greenhouse gas reduction, and clearer goals around health and equity. We’re encouraging regions to share best practices.

Improve state policy and agency support around SB 375: We’re working to broaden the scope of SB 375 so it lives up to its potential — addressing priorities like public health, land conservation, and opportunities for disadvantaged communities. And we’re working to make sure the public has a meaningful voice in how the law is implemented.

We’re working with state transportation agencies to shift how we invest resources, to align with SB 375. The state should invest in public transportation that works for everyone, and safe biking and walking, instead of continuing to widen highways that just fill up again with traffic. But this shift isn’t easy: it will take strong, united voices to get the state to shift how it invests our tax dollars.

Bringing ClimatePlan’s network to increase impact: ClimatePlan is continuing to broaden and build our diverse coalition. From folks advocating for a better life for disadvantaged communities in the Central Valley, to people calling for cleaner air in Southern California, to those who speak up for California’s unique biodiversity—these are just a few of the remarkable advocates, activists, thinkers, and organizers that power our coalition.
